Truth and Love -
By My Own Reckoning kept me reading well past midnight. Cecil Sherman deals in plain truth. Without saying the word, 'love,' and without sentimentality, Cecil pours out love for his churches, for Baptist principles, for his work to start CBF, and for teaching. His unconditional love for Dot helped me to grasp the meaning of the marriage vows and the meaning of real love. I've begun to pass the book along to church members and recommend it to pastors. Anyone who wants to understand what happened to the Southern Baptist Convention, how the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship came to be, and how to be an effective pastor should read it. From spending a little time with Cecil when he was our first CBF Coordinator, I knew he was a wise and encouraging person. His book convinces me that he is a rare combination of pastor, teacher, prophet, leader, and loving human being.

A page turner, a true love story,
a lesson in integrity -
Dr. Sherman was our pastor at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth. He demonstrated tremendous integrity and leadership during a time in his career that was very hard on him due to the larger Baptist battles he fought. The book reads like you're hearing Dr. Sherman in the next room telling the story; it comes through loud and clear in his own voice! My husband and I read it in a day. Who would have thought a pastor's autobiography would be a page-turner? Late at night, while finishing the last chapters about Dot, I could not stop reading. The sense of grief in Dr. Sherman's gradual loss of Dot and the overwhelming devotion demonstrated in his care for her make 'in sickness and in health' take on a whole new meaning. The book is nothing short of inspiring on many levels. Note to Eugenia (Genie as he always called her at BBC): Thank you for insisting that your dad capture all these important memories on paper and share them with us all!

God's True Servant -
I have known Cecil as a pastor, friend and confidant. When I read his book, By My Own Reckoning, it was a microcosm of his whole life. With Cecil there is no veneer, it is factual; the way he sees it. He will tell you in his book or in a sermon or in conversation, "This is my opinion. You can decide for yourself."
When the final chapter is written about Southern Baptists, Cecil will be known as the prophet who saw before any others the true intentions of those who took over the convention.
As it was said of Gandhi, in time we will marvel that he lived among us.
