Much of the popular discussion about discipleship focuses on practices and concerns that actually received little, if any, attention in the teachings of Jesus. At the same time, those matters that were central for Jesus are ignored. These sermons, by pastors and professors with both academic competence and ministerial sensitivity, seek to overcome the shallow nature of much contemporary discussion by setting the New Testament's own agenda on discipleship before us.

W. Hulitt Gloer was, at the time of publication, Professor of New Testament, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Missouri. A graduate of Baylor University (B.A.), Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Ph.D.), Gloer has also taught at Southern Seminary and the North American Baptist Seminary, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
