The Desert of Broken Relationships Excerpt from Songs in the Desert by David R. Currie Pretend you have never heard of country music. Pretend you have a friend who is always talking about how wonderful country music is. Ask him to play one song that best captures the essence of country music. If I were the friend, I would play "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones. There are thousands of songs that deal with the theme of broken relationships, but none compare to this classic. To me, country music--really all good music--speaks to our hearts and touches our deepest emotions. I recall David Allen Coe's song about Hank Williams, which has the lyrics, "Boy, can you make folks feel what you feel inside?" A great song makes the listener feel what the songwriter felt when he or she wrote the song, or even better, opens you up to "feel what you feel inside." Broken relationships hurt badly and for a long time. They can leave scars that may never heal, especially if we never give them a chance to heal. For the man in the song, the pain finally stopped when he died. Are you still dealing with the pain of a broken relationship? |
