Job Title: Graphic Designer

Immediate Supervisor: Vice President, Production Division

Function: Full-time position for a detail-oriented graphic designer with expertise in design and printing technology, as well as skill with the tools required to implement such expertise, toward the goal of helping provide Smyth & Helwys with the highest quality products, services, and promotions.

Skills Required: Experience in graphic design, including text typesetting and web design. Proficiency in Quark and/or InDesign. Familiarity with Macs and Mac software. IT capabilities a plus.

Function Areas

Production

The graphic designer is assigned duties and deadlines by the Vice President, Production based on production needs. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following types of projects:

  • Book Design – Work with the book editor and marketing staff to design and typeset interiors, and to design and finalize covers.

  • Curriculum – Work with editors and marketing staff to design and typeset interiors, to design and finalize covers, and to do pre-press work.

  • Marketing – Work with marketing staff to design and do pre-press work for catalogs, collateral pieces, magazine and newspaper ads, and other company promotion.

  • Website Management – Work with staff to conceptualize, design, implement, and maintain company-related websites.

  • Printer Communications – Communicate with printers as requested to ensure quality control and cost efficiency.

 Marketing

  • Serve as a representative of Smyth & Helwys, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions with other members of the Smyth & Helwys community and with the public.

  • Travel as necessary to participate in workshops, training events, and promotional activities.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of marketing strategies as requested.

  • Offer suggestions and feedback on other materials developed through the Production Division as requested.
