About Us
Smyth & Helwys is a free press. We report to no denominational or outside groups in our work. We only serve churches. This freedom allows us to create resources that are creative, relevant and fresh. For example, while our Sunday School materials support special days such as Easter and Christmas, there are no denominationally related days involved. Our focus is quality Bible study. We celebrate the intelligence of learners, and the devotion of teachers. Our role is to provide insightful information that can lead to growth for Christians and churches. Serving Churches
We have dedicated ourselves to providing excellent resources supporting the ministries of churches. Currently, over 3000 churches use our resources, with more joining our family each week. Smyth & Helwys is also working with like-minded organizations in ministry. We have partnered with Habitat for Humanity as the publisher of their official Vacation Bible School program, Under Construction. Smyth & Helwys is also a partner with Oxford University Press, both in the distribution of their high quality Bibles, and in the revolutionary linking of certain youth and adult materials to their Access Bible. For book readers, Smyth & Helwys publishes a full line of books on most any topic in Christian life. We also publish the new and innovative Smyth & Helwys Commentary series, which will ultimately include 30 volumes.
Our Heritage
Smyth & Helwys is named for two inspiring pioneers of religious liberty, John Smyth and Thomas Helwys. The fact that our company bears their names speaks volumes about the values we hold dear. John Smyth (1554-1612) led his band of English Separatists to Amsterdam to escape religious persecution. Thomas Helwys (1550-1616) died in an English prison, a martyr for religious freedom. Their writings and lives brought freedom to a time when Christians were less free to express their faith. John Smyth & Thomas Helwys — our name celebrates their faith and devotion to these cherished Christian values.
